It’s the 14th of January, I am checking in with you as I’m not a huge believer in New Year's resolutions. As resolutions are by their very nature telling us that we really need to shift our entire life’s habits and getting our will power all revved up! Modern science has taught us that behavior change occurs when our environment and systems are in place and are much more important than willpower.
Being in the health industry for years it’s great to know about this movement stuff, how to help people become physically strong, lose weight, build muscle, and find new toys that enhance their workout.…. that's all really fun, but it only works whenever we can help people bring change into their lives by being aware and mindful.
If you are thinking about creating any kind of change, what I'm going to tell you is that your willpower matters far less than your environment and your systems. Being aware of the importance of these factors will be beneficial to you, as you know life is not a straight line, there will be many curves that come up and if your system fails at each turn it is not working for you. So how are doing so far?
In yoga, the New Year is a continuation of the work we have already been doing. We may have to adjust our schedule and support systems, then we head to the mat—as we do every year, being aware and mindful of our commitment and intention.
