It is a time to reevaluate and make changes in your life…. You do that every day, right?
But this is the New Year which places an accent on change now. This is a time of year when the Fitness Industry goes all out to give you many tools/toys to get in shape, lose weight, and start a new diet. Maybe you have had a conversation or heard something from a friend of a friend who just started a new diet and lost 5 pounds in a week and you think “hey I can do that diet too”, so you go home clean out your refrigerator and you start to stock pile all those new foods, supplements and powders!
This time is different you tell yourself, you are creating a new habit…as you quickly drink that shake down and out the door to the gym! There you find yourself on your 20th push up?, and rushing to finish those “core planks” and find that "new machine" in the corner of the gym, which you heard will take inches off your waist; hopefully no will notice you staring at it too long as you do not even know how to place your body on that machine!
A week goes by…maybe you feel better, or not. Sometimes you do not see the changes you expected so off you go to find another program or diet from a friend of a friend. You start to make excuses and you become that “no show” at the gym/class for a day, and then there are changes in your work schedule, or family’s schedules and BAM everything falls apart!
You have good intentions, but as human being you want it done now, done right, and done fast! You want IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION. Generally things are done better, and some things can only be done right, when done a little bit at a time on a regular basis instead of all at once.
It’s Ok to give yourself permission this New Year to spend some time processing all what has happened in the past year, the good, the bad, and everything in between. Refrain from passing judgement on yourself, but rather accept that this is part of your journey.
You want to grow and improve different aspects of yourself, but before starting that journey, learn to accept where you are in the present moment. Then see what naturally comes about when you don’t force changes in your life.
As a yoga teacher and in my own practice, yoga comes around again to ground me. To keep in mind that no one is average, which means that whatever works for "an average person" (who does not actuality exist) may not work for you. So when you are at the gym and a machine is not working for you (who is that machine made for?) or a certain routine is falling apart, you may need more assistance. In my personal training career I found that to be true for my clients, thankfully they asked for help and we worked together on a program suited for them. Education and keeping them safe was my purpose but most important for you is to know what does work for you, because: There is only you in all your uniqueness!
See you at the studio on your mat….. And A Happy New Year!
